MGC CIVIL WAS ENGAGED TO PROVIDE A RANGE OF CIVIL AND DEMOLITION SERVICES FOR THE OCEAN KEYS SHOPPING CENTRE REDEVELOPMENT. THIS PROJECT PRESENTED SEVERAL CHALLENGES, NOT LEAST BEING THAT THE SHOPPING CENTRE REMAINED OPERATIONAL DURING THE CONSTRUCTION.
Undertaken over two stages of approximately 15,000m2 each, the first stage involved demolition of an existing car park and shop facades to allow for integration with the new centre. This area was excavated to a depth of 4m to create a basement for a new car park. The second stage involved the bulk and detailed earthworks for the pad area to accommodate the extended shopping centre.
A key challenge to overcome by the MGC Civil Team was the ground conditions, as the entire area was primarily limestone. This resulted in the removal of 40,000m3 of limestone to a depth of 4m and the subsequent import of clean fill.
Another key feature of this project was the installation of 54,000 Atlantis Cells by the MGC Civil Team as a new stormwater management system for the entire shopping centre.
